Dump truck hauler taxes: T2125 or T2, 40% CCA, and fuel rules that hold up

Most dump truck operators should stay on a T2125 until profit clearly outruns what they need to live on — then incorporate for the deferral, not the prestige. The truck itself is the biggest deduction in the business at 40% declining balance, and the fastest way into trouble is coloured diesel in a licensed truck or revenue that does not match the T5018 slips your GCs filed. We handle all three so the return matches the paper trail.

T2125 or T2: incorporate when profit outruns your draw

The right structure follows one number: how much the business earns beyond what you personally spend. A hauler netting $80,000 and living on all of it gains almost nothing from a corporation — every dollar comes out as salary or dividends and gets taxed personally anyway, while the T2, corporate bookkeeping, and payroll filings add cost. A hauler netting $180,000 who only needs $100,000 leaves real money inside a corporation at the small business rate — 12.2% combined in Ontario versus personal brackets that climb past 50% — and that deferral compounds into the next truck.

Because most dump truck owners run their own iron, carry their own insurance, and haul for multiple GCs and brokers, the personal services business risk that haunts incorporated highway drivers rarely applies here — but we still confirm the facts before recommending the switch.

The truck writes off at 40% — if it lands in the right class

A dump truck rated above 11,788 kg gross vehicle weight and used primarily for hauling goods belongs in Class 16 at 40% declining balance — most tandems and tri-axles qualify easily. The service pickup goes in Class 10 at 30%, and misclassifying the big truck into Class 10 leaves a quarter of the first-year deduction on the table. Loan interest deducts on top of CCA, and the HST paid on the purchase usually comes back as one large input tax credit in the period you buy.

Two timing traps. First, CCA is optional each year — in a weak season we may claim less to preserve deductions for stronger years rather than wasting them against low income. Second, selling or trading a written-down truck above its remaining pool balance triggers recapture, so the year you upgrade often carries a hidden income bump. We model the trade before you sign at the dealership, not after.

Fuel taxes: the coloured diesel line is bright red

Coloured (dyed) diesel never goes in a licensed dump truck. The tax-reduced fuel is for unlicensed off-road equipment, and Ontario inspectors do test tanks at scale houses and job sites — dye in a plated truck means penalties plus assessed back-tax, and it is one of the few pure own-goals in this industry. If you also run a loader or excavator, we set up separate fuel accounts so the coloured-fuel purchases trace cleanly to the off-road machines.

Unlike highway truckers, most aggregate haulers work locally, so IFTA rarely applies and there is no 80% long-haul meal claim — a driver home every night deducts essentially no meals, and claiming them anyway is a reliable review trigger. Your hauling invoices carry 13% HST, and fuel, tires, repairs, and plates generate steady input tax credits on the GST34. Quarterly filing usually beats annual for cash flow visibility once fuel spend gets serious.

T5018 slips: CRA already knows your revenue

General contractors and construction payers report what they paid you on T5018 slips, and CRA runs matching programs against them. When reported revenue lands below the slip total — because a settlement was netted against fuel advances, a December cheque was deposited in January, or a broker's statement was misread — the mismatch letter arrives on its own schedule. We reconcile load tickets, broker statements, and T5018s to the penny before filing, so the return agrees with what CRA already has.

Buying equipment at US auctions adds a border layer — duty, GST at the border, and exchange on the wire — which we cover in our cross-border tax guide for dump truck haulers. For the full picture of how we run corporate and personal filings on fixed fees, see our tax services page.

Common questions.

Should I incorporate my dump truck business?

Only once profit consistently exceeds what you need to live on — that surplus is what earns the 12.2% small business rate instead of your personal bracket. Before that point, the T2125 is simpler and lets early losses offset other income.

Can I use coloured diesel in my dump truck?

No. Coloured fuel is restricted to unlicensed off-road equipment like loaders and excavators. Using it in a plated truck brings penalties and assessed tax, and tanks do get dipped at scales and job sites.

What CCA class is a dump truck?

Class 16 at 40% declining balance, provided it is rated above 11,788 kg GVW and used primarily for hauling. Smaller trucks and the service pickup fall to Class 10 at 30%, so classification is worth checking before you file.
